The Australasian Raptor Association....

is a special interest group of the Birds Australia Group, a non-government, non-profit conservation organisation
promotes the study, conservation and management of diurnal and nocturnal birds of prey in the Australasian region
represents a diverse range of amateur and professional members who have a shared interest in raptors
provides advice to conservation agencies and governments on the conservation of Australasian raptors
produces publications to inform members and the public of a variety of raptor issues
conducts, administers and coordinates research programs to further the knowledge of raptors
 
Our vision is to ensure the long term viability of raptor populations and their habitats throughout Australasia

Our mission is to promote the study, conservation and management of Australasian raptors for their intrinsic value and for the enjoyment of people now and in the future. This will be achieved through education, research, community involvement, advice to government and cooperation with other conservation organisations.

Goal 1 - Educational

To provide a diverse range of opportunities and forums for all people to learn about Australasia's raptors and their conservation

Strategies

  1.1 produce regular publications and other specialist material
  1.2 participate in relevant public events that promote or affect the Associations aims
  1.3 liaise and advise governments and non-government organisations in a cooperative effort to enhance raptor conservation
  1.4 encourage the establishment of advisory groups in each State, Territory and member country where the need or opportunity arises
  1.5 employ an extension officer to promote the Association's aims
  1.6 conduct a major conference at least every five years
  1.7 encourage all States, Territories and member countries to hold workshops, meetings, public seminars and other events
  1.8 establish a reference collection of publications, books, photographs and other material within the Birds Australia library
  1.9 improve and maintain close links with the Birds Australia as a specialist advisory group

Goal 2 - Research and Conservation

To make a significant contribution to Australasian research and conservation

Strategies

  2.1 encourage the publication of research information
  2.2 formulate and review research and management priorities
  2.3 conduct a major conference at least every five years
  2.4 encourage all States, Territories and member countries to hold workshops, meetings, public seminars and other events
  2.5 establish and maintain a register of member's interests, skills and resources
  2.6 actively pursue corporate sponsorship and non-corporate donations/bequeaths to fund research and conservation projects
  2.7 develop and maintain long-term projects which encourages the participation of members
  2.8 encourage the implementation of raptor conservation plans as outlined in the Action Plan for Conservation of Australian Birds and subsequent publications
  2.9 utilise the powerful image of raptors to promote the conservation of threatened habitat

Goal 3 - Animal welfare

To use management effectively for the conservation of raptors

Strategies

  3.1 improve the quality of injured and orphaned raptor rehabilitation through codes of practice, discussion and workshops
  3.2 produce and publish a conservation statement/s which outlines measures to improve conservation of raptors and their habitat
  3.3 produce management guides to help land holders understand and deal with stock/pet predation
  3.4 encourage all governments to maintain or strengthen local legislation for the protection of raptors
  3.5 pursue uniform and consistent legislative powers and penalties throughout the region
  3.6 encourage all member countries to honour obligations under, a where applicable become signatories to, International treaties that advance the protection and conservation of raptors and their habitats
  3.7 encourage the use of land management codes of practice for the conservation of raptors

Goal 4 - Organisational

To improve the effectiveness of the organisation

Strategies

  4.1 increase and maintain a financial membership of at least six hundred by the year 2000
  4.2 through the development of projects and task groups increase the participation rate of members
  4.3 conduct meetings in accordance with Association's constitution
  4.4 wherever possible promote Birds Australia Group and encourage members to make use of Birds Australia services
  4.5 employ an officer to promote ARA activities, implement policies and coordinate projects
  4.6 improve the regularity and flow of information between the Executive, Area Representatives and the members
  4.7 ensure that membership fees and other income is sufficient to ensure the continuation of the Associations core functions
  4.8 actively pursue sponsorship, donations and bequeaths to a level which will allow an expansion of activities
  4.9 actively seek grants to undertake projects and other operations
  4.10 utilise Birds Australia's resources and expertise to enhance the effectiveness of the Association's activities
  4.11 ensure that all members are covered by public liability and accident insurance whilst working on approved projects
